Understanding Cooling Systems (Part 1): From Cold Storage to Different Cooling Applications
When I started communicating with overseas customers in the refrigeration industry, I quickly realized that knowing product names was only the first step.
The real challenge was understanding what those names actually represented.
During customer conversations, I often heard terms like:
- Condensing Unit
- Air Cooler
- AHU
- Chiller
- Refrigeration Unit
For refrigeration engineers, these terms are common.
But when you are communicating with customers from different industries and different countries, simply knowing the definition of each term is not enough.
The more important questions are:
What problem is the customer trying to solve?
What cooling system is behind the equipment name?
What solution is truly suitable for their application?
I still remember when I first encountered some of these terms.
A customer would ask:
“Do you supply condensing units?”
“We need air coolers for our cold room.”
“Can you provide an AHU for a clean room project?”
At that time, I understood that these products were related to refrigeration, but I did not fully understand why one project required a condensing unit while another needed a chiller.
After communicating with more customers and learning about different applications, I gradually realized:
These are not simply different products.
They are different solutions designed for different cooling requirements.
A customer does not buy a chiller, refrigeration unit, or air cooler because they want a machine.
They buy it because they need to solve a real problem:
- Keeping products at the correct temperature
- Protecting production processes
- Maintaining environmental stability
- Improving equipment reliability
This is why understanding the system behind the equipment name is so important.
Cooling Starts with Understanding the Application
One of the most important lessons I have learned from working with global customers is:
The equipment name is usually not the beginning of the conversation. The application is.
For example:
A customer says:
“We need cold storage.”
This information alone is not enough.
We still need to understand:
- What products will be stored?
- What temperature is required?
- How stable should the temperature be?
- Is this for storage, production, or a controlled environment?
The same applies to industrial cooling.
A factory may say:
“We need cooling for our production line.”
The actual requirement may be an industrial chiller.
A pharmaceutical company may say:
“We need temperature control.”
The actual solution may be a chiller combined with an AHU system.
A food company may say:
“We need refrigeration.”
The actual solution may be a complete cold storage refrigeration system.
The application determines the solution.

Cold Storage, Cold Room and Chilled Storage: Understanding the Difference
Cold storage is one of the first concepts I needed to fully understand when communicating with overseas customers.
Different markets may use slightly different terms:
- Cold Storage
- Cold Room
- Chilled Storage
- Frozen Storage
- Freezer Room
At first, these terms seem very similar.
However, they can represent completely different requirements.
A seafood company, a fruit distributor, and a pharmaceutical manufacturer may all say:
“We need cold storage.”
But their actual refrigeration systems may be completely different.
The required temperature, humidity control, airflow design, and equipment selection can vary significantly.
What Is Cold Storage?
Cold Storage is a general term for temperature-controlled storage spaces.
It is used in many industries where products need to be maintained within a specific temperature range.
Typical applications include:
- Food storage
- Pharmaceutical storage
- Beverage storage
- Logistics warehouses
- Agricultural products
Depending on the temperature requirement, cold storage can be divided into different categories.

Cold Storage vs Chilled Storage
Many people confuse these two terms.
The relationship is simple:
Chilled Storage is one type of Cold Storage.
Cold Storage is the broader category.
For example:
A fruit warehouse may require chilled storage at around 2℃.
A frozen seafood warehouse may require storage below -18℃.
Both are cold storage applications, but they require different refrigeration solutions.
Cold Storage Is Not the Same as Air Conditioning
Another common question is:
“Is a cold room basically a large air conditioner?”
From the refrigeration principle, they are similar.
Both systems use:
- Compressor
- Condenser
- Expansion device
- Evaporator
However, the purpose is completely different.
